Your girlfriend was kidnapped https://grandeaglecasino.co.uk/withdrawal/ by an evil scientist and dragged to his sinister mansion. Your actions? Call the police? Light the batsignal in the sky? Do something reasonable and smart? No no. We need to act more simply and reliably. Don’t run from danger. On the contrary, strive for them. Take two friends, or girlfriends, and fall into the house of a mad kidnapper at night and save your love. No sooner said than done. And this feat will be told… already told in Maniac Mansion. But you don’t remember this. Few people remember. It was so long ago. Released in 1988, Maniac Mansion was a brash newcomer going its own way. Along the way, he trampled Sierra’s hegemony in the quest genre and brought Lucasarts to the top. Maniac Mansion. Milestone. Cult game. And their very first quest.
So what was unusual about Maniac Mansion?? What was the game like back then?? The entire game is a semi-parody of B-movies. Humorous, talks about saving a girl from the clutches of a mad scientist. There’s a giant mansion and you have to rescue your girlfriend from his basement. And that’s all. Forget about modern tips and other goodies that make life easier. You have to figure it out yourself. Find your way through the house. The entire gameplay is exploring the estate and trying to figure out how to move on, and ultimately get to the basement. Pixel-haiting in all its glory. Combing room after room, looking for the things you need to move on. From time to time you will be entertained with videos on the game engine telling about the situation in the house. No QTE, and I don’t know if this is a minus or a plus, because QTE was invented 20 years after the game was released. But the lack of QTE will compensate for non-linearity. In Maniac Mansion, the developers added a choice of six characters – one main one is the lover of the kidnapped girl, and we can choose the remaining two. Makes a party of three people. Everyone has their own unique abilities. Some are good at technology, some are strong, some are even musicians. By switching between them at any time, we complete the quest. Some puzzles can only be solved with two characters. All this allows Maniac Mansion to be played multiple times, mixing the composition. And ultimately, get all five endings of the game. There are still many ways to lose – from a banal and boring nuclear explosion to revenge for a hamster you fried alive in the microwave. Or stupidly discover that you lost the game a while ago by doing something you shouldn’t. Yes, you can lose at Maniac Mansion, but you will discover this fact much later, having reached a dead end. That’s why you need to smoke the manual. Located in the archive with the game, downloaded from www.old-games.ru/. It is here that there is a version translated completely into Russian, and along with it, it comes with a user manual telling the story of the game, a walkthrough book, a book of codes, and a gorgeous poster. Therefore, I recommend downloading from here. And yes, the code book is not those books from the 90s that describe how to get maximum life and go to the level selection menu. Everything is much tougher here. Everyone knows the annoying modern anti-piracy systems. They put a spoke in the wheels and piss off more license buyers than they interfere with torrent lovers. But in 1988, anti-piracy protection was made part of the gameplay. On the second floor there is a door locked with a combination lock. If you typed the code incorrectly four times, there is a nuclear mushroom and no one else lives within a radius of eight kilometers. But how do you know what to enter?? Easy, on the code entry screen at the top it will say, for example, “Section 6, 22, AND”. Then you open the code book, look for section six, column “I” and horizontal line 22. All. Enter the code. Because of this, without a code book, the game is basically impossible to complete. So the pirates walked through the forest. But it was a double-edged sword. It was annoying that the door had to be opened all the time. Constantly look for this code. Plus, my game crashed and I couldn’t open this door. Therefore, we launch the game through ScummVM and the door will be constantly open. Download the program through the same site as the game. And you will be fine. If we talk about the disadvantages of the game, then it is impossible not to talk about the advantages. Walk past the main feature of Maniac Mansion. Its interface. This was the main weapon of the game, which made a mini-revolution. In Sierra quests, you had to enter a word to do something. For example, you need to transfer an item to another character. How to do it? Write the action verb. But what to write – the word “give”? Or "transfer"? Or maybe “hand over”? Running through all the options, you get what you need. It’s long and boring. Maniac Mansion doesn’t have this drawback. All the necessary command verbs are listed below. Which is very convenient. But as this is a test of the pen, there were some mistakes. The only drawback of the Maniac Mansion interface, which was eliminated in subsequent games, is that it is overloaded with unnecessary words. Total words – 15. Which is a lot. And sometimes it’s unclear how and what to use. Let’s not find fault with the words “turn off” and “on”, which are written separately – maybe this is correct, but why were “use” and “unlock” separated?? Using a key on a door or unlocking a door with a key makes no difference, but it greatly relieves the load on the interface. You can easily get rid of half the buttons without making the game inconvenient for the player. But later Lucasarts corrected itself.
Maniac Mansion is a harbinger of the golden era of quest building. Even Dandy visited. It was here that ideas arose that received such powerful continuations in the 90s in games from Lucasarts. It was a trial balloon that turned out to be successful. And all subsequent quests only consolidated their success. The game was great for 1988. And even now, it has not yet lost its relevance, the graphics are at the level of a modern Indian-shit-pixel quest, non-linearity and humor make the game interesting for the current gamer. If you get over your pixel-haiting aversion.
